Nobody has time for computer problems. With that in mind here is a few tips to help limit the downtime.
1. Install system wide Anti-Virus Software. This should be a corporate type designed for networks such as CA e-Trust. Software designed for standalone PC's can cause havoc on a network.
2. Install system wide Anti-Spyware Software. Again this should be a corporate version. CA Pest Patrol Corporate Edition is a good choice.
3. MAKE SURE THEY GET UPDATED! Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware Software doesn't do any good if the signatures are out of date.
4. Backup your system and MAKE SURE THE BACKUPS ARE GOOD! Take a look at this article.
5. Perform Maintenance. A word of caution here, sometimes patches/updates etc. break currently installed software. Always be sure you know what was installed during the patch/update so it can be undone in the event something doesn't work as expected.
6. If all this sounds daunting, consider a maintenance contract from you IT provider.
